DXC Technology and open source
DXC Technology is about applying great innovative technology to deliver new outcomes for our clients’ businesses. In many cases this great technology and innovation comes from the open source community. Many projects incorporate open source products as part of our solutions or as tools used in day-to-day operations. Under the leadership of CTO Dan Hushon, we position open source as a key part of our technology strategy, bringing the benefits of open source to our clients.
DXC’s Open Source Program, sponsored by the CTO office, focuses on three areas:
1. Use open source within DXC.
We encourage the use of open source within DXC. We do realize, however, that although open source might be free as in speech, it is not always free as in beer. We have to make sure our people understand the licenses involved and know what software is approved (or not) for use. We also need to point people to great open source products. To do this, we have an ever-evolving “White List” of software that has been approved for use. Typically we have internal training available for this software to educate our developers, architects and other technologists. In this way we can stimulate a thriving open source community at DXC.
2. Contribute to existing open source projects.
We encourage our people to participate in the open source community and give back. In the past, people in a large corporation like DXC might be reluctant to participate in the open source community, as they might not know the legal ramifications of doing so. Recognizing this, our Open Source Program provides a simple “Green List” procedure to give our employees an easy way to indicate that they want to contribute to an open source project, and receive approval to do so. Ensuring that our employees can be confident about contributing to the open source community without worrying about legal issues is very important.
3. Open-source DXC software.
Our Open Source Program is also about actively open-sourcing DXC software. We are reviewing our vast portfolio of software for viable candidates to release as open source. You can always find the current list of DXC open source projects on the DXC Technology GitHub organization's main page.
