As the principal passenger railway operator in the Netherlands, Dutch Railways handles 1.2 million passengers every day, with 4,800 scheduled trains. The company provides reliable passenger transport, comfortable trains and buses, lively stations and station areas, and a range of services for a pleasant journey from door to door. NedTrain, a subsidiary company of Dutch Railways, is the specialist when it comes to technical maintenance of trains, quick service, cleaning, and long- and short-term revision. For the past 3 years, NedTrain has been modernizing its maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) ICT systems. The company also realized it needed a facelift for its outdated PLATO workplace environment, which had become a barrier to fully profiting from the back-office upgrade.
DXC Dynamic Desktop provided the modern virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) technology to meet NedTrain’s requirements. With Dynamic Desktop, NedTrain had a choice between two types of workplaces: - Published Desktop (or shared Windows Server 2008 R2–based virtual desktop) - Hosted Virtual Desktop (or dedicated private Windows 7 virtual desktop) - The latter type is the most flexible workplace delivered from DXC’s secure data center, as it allows users to install their own software.
With DXC Dynamic Desktop, NedTrain users finally have the freedom and flexibility they need. Independent from the front-end device, applications can be securely viewed 24x7 from any location (in the office, at home or on the road) and from any device (desktop, laptop, thin client, tablet or even smartphone). All user settings are continuously stored, enabling a consistent user experience, regardless of which device the user is working from. Work sessions are preserved, so a user can start a Word document in the office from a thin client, then continue it from their laptop while commuting home on the train. The desktop experience can now be achieved on all tablets and smartphones that support a Citrix Receiver. The dream of combining BYOD and ubiquitous (anytime, anywhere, any device) computing is now a reality for NedTrain. In addition, NedTrain has the option to deploy a workplace where users can install their own software. The workplace is hosted from a 24x7 securely maintained DXC data center. The result: a flexible and secure workplace.
