Microsoft SPLA: Cloud licensing for essential products
As one of the world’s largest hosters and most established developers of hosted technologies, Microsoft offers service providers a chance to profit from the ever-expanding cloud opportunity. As a hoster, you’re ideally positioned to grow the hosted services market by using Microsoft’s powerful and easy-to-use licensing program, the Services Provider License Agreement (SPLA).

The Microsoft SPLA program provides the license rights to host specific Microsoft software and empowers service providers and independent software vendors (ISVs) to license Microsoft products on a monthly basis, during a three-year agreement term, and host those products and solutions for your customers.
With SPLA, you can license these technologies on a monthly basis during a three-year agreement term and use them to offer hosted services and applications to your customers. Products and solutions includes:
- Windows Server
- Microsoft SQL Server
- Microsoft Exchange
- Microsoft Dynamics
- Microsoft SharePoint Server
- And more…
SPLA is the primary licensing program for all service providers, including ISVs, offering their applications as software services to their customers through the cloud or a private network. Microsoft licensed products are used to provide these services, such as:
- Website hosting
- Application hosting
- Messaging service (e.g. email services)
- Platform, infrastructure, and software services
- Streaming media services
Key benefits of SPLA
- Deliver a customized service. Flexibility to deliver tailored IT services to your customers through a dedicated or shared hosting environment. Increase the value of your services by managing software use rights for your customers.
- Pay only for the products that you made available to your customers to use the previous month. There are no start-up costs or long-term commitments.
- Access the most current product versions. Give your customers the most current and capable Microsoft platforms. Download your products at no charge through the Microsoft Volume Licensing Service Center (VLSC) instead of ordering physical media.
- Try before you buy licenses. Test and evaluate products internally before offering them to your customers as a service.
There are 3 types of licenses under the SPLA program that can be used during the agreement term.
- Per subscriber. A Subscriber Access License (SAL) is required for each unique individual user or device that is authorized to access or otherwise use the licensed products.
- Per core. Each Core License (CL) allows an unlimited number of users to access the server software installed on the licensed server with a determined number of physical cores for products licensed through a per-core model.
- Per processor. Each Processor License (PL) allows an unlimited number of users to access the product that is installed on the server without a separate SAL.
SPLA licensing is a lucrative opportunity, but service providers without deep expertise in the complexities of portfolio management can overspend on licenses—and subsequently undercut profits. At DXC Software Licensing and Management Services (SLMS) Hosting, we make it our business to navigate the complexities of SPLA to ensure you understand your rights and benefits and avoid overpaying. With our experience on your side, you’ll be able to optimize the value of your SPLA licenses and transform your business beyond your current hosting service provider offerings.
