Despite a quarter-century of continuous economic growth, Australia’s global competitiveness is on the line. The Office of the Chief Economist reports that we face challenges in productivity, business investment and business–research institution collaboration. This may seem especially ironic, given how well – relative to many other advanced economies – Australia weathered the 2008 global financial crisis. Perhaps our economy was spared the ‘creative destruction’ that forced industries in harder-hit economies to reimagine and rebuild. Regardless of the cause, Australia must turn this around if it is to remain a competitive and prosperous member of the global economy.
The Digital Evolution Index for 2017 rates New Zealand as a Stand Out nation, while Australia is rated as a Stall Out nation. Interestingly, we are a nation of early adopters of consumer tech like smartphones, and in enterprises, we were early adopters of virtualisation technologies – yet Australia has already reached a ‘digital plateau’.
We’ve seen many Australian businesses embracing digital transformation as a tool to drive applied innovation and accelerate product development, understand their market and attract new talent.
We believe this is not enough. We must fully embrace the need for business transformation, beginning with goals, marketplaces and business models. Only then can a digital transformation have its full effect. Only then can a digital transformation truly prepare a business for competition and innovation in the 21st century.
