Personal Data – Trust and Privacy: National data governance strategies and opportunities

Australia’s population is one of the most technology literate in the world. Easy and affordable access to devices, broadband and online services has placed us at the forefront of digital technology adoption. For most Australians, accessing their data and essential services with a mobile device is as straightforward as visiting a branch office. To keep up with this demand, corporate and government organisations are rapidly working towards universal data access, where information such as an insurance policy can be accessed via a digital channel, not just in an annual letter.
How Australian government agencies can enhance citizen services through improved data sharing and management.
For government agencies, this digital transformation is allowing better access to citizen data and is paving the way for modern, omnichannel services. The challenges are digitising legacy information sources and building platforms for service delivery.
The Commonwealth Government continues to forge ahead with its agenda of appropriate public use of private data. Two vehicles of this include the MyHealthRecord initiative moving from an opt-in approach to opt-out one, and the proposed data sharing and release legislation. These are especially important to watch as each has an impact on the government’s ability to create new and innovative applications and services to keep citizens informed and ensure government spending on essential services is not overshadowed by inefficient administration.
New research from Telsyte shows Australians are comfortable sharing data for the greater good of society and government services. Our trust in data services and online privacy controls are certainly under pressure (not least because of high-profile data breach incidents); however, we do trust government agencies with our data more than the private sector.
While old habits can be hard to change for citizens when dealing with government agencies, the time has never been better for agencies to move most citizens onto digital platforms to save taxpayer money and improve services.
