Project “GridServ” - what3words
GridServ is a prototype of a smart city platform built by DXC Technology integrating the location system of what3words.
The world is divided into a grid of 3m x 3m squares by what3words and assigned a unique 3 word address to each square. The GridServ platform allows smart cities to offer and manage location-based services based on the what3words squares such as drone navigation, delivery, security services or advertisement. Goals of the project include:
- Dividing the world into 3 x 3 meter squares
- Each square has a unique identifier consisting out of 3 words like “apple.banana.spoon”
- DXC Technology uses this easy address system for navigating drones
- Routes for drones are automatically calculated based on restrictions of specific areas
The Startup Autobahn program allowed DXC Technology to showcase a drone use case as one application example for the GridServ platform. It allows land owners to offer flight rights on their property in exchange for a micro compensation. Drone pilots can then select the start and target destination.
Based on this information, an optimized route for drones will be calculated. Drones receive this route information through an API and then follow the calculated route autonomously. Furthermore specific areas for drone flights can be regulated, purchased or rented temporarily through this platform.
Our vision
In the future, the GridServ platform will be the central platform for multiple industry use cases, i.e. in the field of logistics or advertisement.
what3words gives everyone and everywhere a 3 word address. It’s precise, simple and unique. And it’s changing the way people and businesses talk about location.
