Customer Voice: Stéphane Detruiseux - CISO & Technology VP, Alstom
At the outset of the COVID-19 crisis, Alstom, a global leader in manufacturing for the transportation sector, massively moved work from offices to homes without disruption thanks to its “anytime, anywhere, any device” strategy, which was tested for more than two years. Using Office 365 permitted all Alstom employees — suddenly remote workers— to access files, collaborate remotely on shared data, and stay connected with colleagues using Microsoft Teams.
To enable its engineers to design and develop products from home, Alstom rapidly implemented a full virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) 3D solution from scratch.
Alstom offers a complete range of equipment and services, from high-speed trains, metros, trams and e-buses to integrated systems, customised services, infrastructure, signalling and digital mobility solutions.
Using Microsoft Azure NV, Alstom selected the appropriate graphical power units to support heavy 3D rendering needs, and with Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktop Services, the company managed the large-scale, automatic deployment of the machines on demand. Microsoft solutions including Azure Active Directory and multifactor authentication, plus other third-party components, secured the applications and data.
Alstom’s solution, supported by Azure cloud and DXC’s integration services, was in place in less than a week in Western Europe, supporting 2,000 engineers in the first week of the state-mandated lockdown, and extended to Southeast Asia two weeks later.
This effort shows how instrumental the digital transformation of business and a clear cloud strategy are for a global company to succeed in an uncertain world. Without this digital dexterity, it would have been impossible for Alstom to face such an unprecedented situation.
